I visited my hometown, Tallahassee, last year for the first time in many years. I was visiting for an old friend from high school’s baby shower. While I was there I took photos of another friend and her new baby...

Are Newborn Photoshoots Worth it? The short answer from your Tallahassee Newborn Photographer is of course YES. But you want to know why. I’ll tell you why they’re worth every penny. All the time. All the effort. Every single time.
Imagine right now your firstborn is 17. You’re hiring something to take their senior photos. You’re buying the cap and gown. They have a job and a car. They’re moving 4 hours away in a couple months for collage. You know everything changes after this. It won’t be you and all your kids under the same roof anymore. Now- lets assume you don’t have any newborn photos of your child. But then magically an old friend you lost touch with says, “Years ago you I took this photo of you holding your firstborn as a newborn. I framed it for you.” How odd. Obviously why didn’t they give this to you 17 years ago so you could enjoy it all these years. BUT! You can have it now. And now is when you want it most! How much is that photo worth to you then?
First time parents have no way of imagining how fast the first year goes. And as I’m sure we’ve heard from the moms older than us- the little years fly by and before we know it our little squishy babies will be driving off to start their lives on their own. We can’t keep them little but we can delight in them while they’re little. We can savor it and celebrate it and capture a tiny window of it to brighten and strengthen our memories of them.
Having a Baby is Hard. Did you know that? Everyone experiences pregnancy and motherhood differently. I am personally someone who has really struggled with pregnancy and then basked in the newborn days. But regardless- they are difficult. There’s morning sickness, random pains, hormones, nursing struggles, and fatigue. However this transition is monumental. When you book a newborn session, among all the chaos of feedings and doctors visits, you have a moment of calm and beauty. A chance to be pampered and feel beautiful and bond as a new family. It’s a moment in those busy first weeks to pause and cherish for a lifetime to come. Science has shown that looking at photos actually change the synapses in your brain to remember things it would have otherwise forgotten.
Why not just wait until they’re older? Babies look entirely different just 3 months later. For the first 2 weeks after birth, newborns look just about how they did when they were born, but after that they hit a growth spurt. Most newborns can’t even fit the newborn sized clothing that swallowed them whole by 1 month and then the opportunity is gone to capture all the little newborn details as they were.
This stage is the beginning of your story together, and whats more the beginning of a life. Its a very special thing to hold onto that beginning and celebrate it.
When you’re a child, you’ve got very clear, well celebrated milestones. You are constantly reminded you’re changing and learning and growing. You learn how to ride a bike. You learn to read. You become a middle schooler. You go to prom. You get your first job. You graduate college. Then you’re an adult. You’re “grown- up.” As if there isn’t anymore changing and learning and growing after that. As if the transitions are done and you can just coast. Whenever a newborn comes into my studio, I meet a new human. But I also meet a new mom. A new dad. Maybe a new brother or sister. Everyone just changed. Everyone’s learning. Everyone’s growing up. Not just the baby. And that is worth celebrating.
Here’s whats more.. You don’t need to stress about your newborn session. I’ve taken care of everything. So you can just be a mom.
