I visited my hometown, Tallahassee, last year for the first time in many years. I was visiting for an old friend from high school’s baby shower. While I was there I took photos of another friend and her new baby...
You may be here because you searched google “What age Should Newborn Photos be taken?” Maybe you just found out you’re pregnant and you’re already planning everything. Maybe you’ve just had your first baby and all of a sudden realize “WOW! I need to get pictures!” Depending on who you ask, you will get different answers to the question What Age Should Newborn Photos be taken?
What I recommend to my clients
When my clients and I have our consultation, we discuss when to have the newborn photos taken. We schedule something less than 2 weeks after their due date. This is because I recommend getting newborn photos taken between 7-10 days old. But mostly just within the first 2 weeks of birth.
Why?
I recently had a photo reveal with a client just 2 weeks after her newborn session. Her newborn session was done at 8 days old. So her daughter was less than a month old. When she saw her photos, she exclaimed, “I’m so glad we did this! She’s already so different!” Babies go through a growth spurt at 2 weeks making them obviously larger, but also they’ll often go through a normal phase of cradle cap and baby acne. They also grow more alert and with that sometimes fussier and more difficult to get to sleep or stay sleeping.
Is 2 months too old for newborn photos?
While I recommend newborn photos at less than 2 weeks. Parents often ask, is 4 weeks too old for newborn photos? Is 2 months too old for newborn photos? The answer is no- but they may look different. Babies this age are often more difficult to keep asleep in various poses. However, they still sleep really deeply when being held! So with older newborns, I typically do more photos in parents arms especially at the start and then maybe some simple, natural photos of just the baby in a basket or on a blanket.
Here is a lovely outdoor newborn session I did with an 8 week old baby!
